- DAVID KORTY
DAVID KORTY (born 1971, California) makes work that explores the everyday objects, scenes, and terrain of his living environment. His distinct geometric visual language takes this quotidian subject matter and pushes it towards abstraction, flattening it into a complex depiction of commonplace geometry. Korty’s paintings oscillate between these abstractions and their identifiable subjects. What results is a sophisticated dialogue between the non-objective and the representational, a way of seeing the surrounding world and reinventing it. Korty earned his B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design and his M.F.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has exhibited widely throughout the United States and Europe. Solo exhibitions include Night Gallery, Los Angeles in 2013, Kimmerich, New York in 2012, China Art Objects, Los Angeles in 2011; Kimmerich, New York; Gerhardsen Gerner, Berlin and Sadie Coles HQ, London all 2010. His exhibition with Marieta Chirulescu at Mary Mary, Glasgow was part of the 2012 Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art. Selected group exhibitions include ‘Permanent Incandescent’, Elephant, Los Angeles (2012), ‘On Forgery: Is One Thing Better Than Another?’, LAxART, Los Angeles (2011); ‘Painting Codes,’ Galleria Comunale d’Arte Contemporanea di Monfalcone, Italy (2006); ‘Landscape Confection,’ Wexner Center for the Arts, Ohio (2005).
