Miranda July is a filmmaker, performing artist and writer. She grew up in Berkeley, California where she began her career by writing plays and staging them at an all-ages club. July’s videos, performances, and web-based projects have been presented at sites such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum and in the 2002 and 2004 Whitney Biennials. Her collection of stories, No One Belongs Here More Than You, was published this year, and her fiction has been printed in The Paris Review, Harper’s, and The New Yorkeri. In 2002 July created the participatory website, learningtoloveyoumore, with artist Harrell Fletcher, and a companion book will be published by Prestel this fall. She wrote, directed and starred in her first feature-length film, Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005), which won a special jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival and four prizes at the Cannes Film Festival, including the Camera d’Or. July recently debuted a new performance at The Kitchen (NY), and is currently working on her second movie. She lives in Los Angeles. More about Miranda can be found at www.MirandaJuly.com.
Miranda’s issue was a vinyl pull-down window shade complete with mounting brackets. There were two different shades with text silkscreened on the inside of each. One shade read, “If this shade is down I’m not who you think I am.” The other shade read, “If this shade is down I’m begging your forgiveness on bended knee with tears streaming down my face.” Subscribers received only one shade. The process of selection was completely random.
